Not sure if Sony "gets it"
They blew it with Betmax and Walkman portables in the 70’s as well as Mini-Discs and SACDs in the 80’s. They currently make one of the best component FM tuners in history (selling for less than $100) but no one knows about it. And although they recently won one battle with Blu-Ray video technology they seem to be on the losing end once again.
According to SonyInsider.com, the company is about to release a $2,300 Blu-Ray mega changer — capable of holding and playing 400 discs. This will be in addition to the current model which holds up to 200 Blu-ray discs.
Pretty impressive except for the fact that there are dirt cheap devices like the Roku box (which you can buy for $99) to download HD movies directly from Netflix and Amazon to watch them immediately. You don’t have to buy/own/store any discs.
And Roku isn’t your only option. There’s Apple TV (terrific device) and others rushing to market. Why would you spend all that money for discs and playback devices when new technology will let you watch what you want – when you want – at a fraction of the cost?
No wonder Sony is in trouble.
